Based on a cult book that spans the jetset life from 1946-1972, the movie tells the true-crime tale of US socialite Barbara Daly (Moore), who married the heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune.

As their marriage unravels she makes their only son, Tony (Redmayne), her confidant. First they share a lover (gay "walker" Hugh Dancy), then Barbara seduces Tony to "cure" him of his sexual orientation. As his mental health starts to deteriorate, he harbours violent fantasies towards her.
